Swedegas LNG-invests in Gothenburg

The Gothenburg-based infrastructure company will set up new Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) bunkering infrastructure in the Skarvik part of the Port of Gothenburg's Energy Harbour.

The new facility will comprise a discharge station, a vacuum-insulated cryogenic pipeline, and quay-to-ship bunkering equipment. LNG will be brought using trailers or containers to be unloaded at the discharging station, from where gas will be distributed via a 450 m long pipe to Skarvik's jetties no. 519 and 521. The new infrastructure is expected to be fully operational in 2018.

Swedegas' Gothenburg LNG investment has been assigned by the EU with the Project of Common Interest status, having also an approved support from the EU's Innovation and Networks Executive Agency.

"This investment marks the starting point for the gradual expansion of the facility, eventually supplying the transport sector and Swedish industry with liquefied gas. Regardless of the sector, it ultimately comes down to making the transition from oil-based products," Johan Zettergren, Swedegas' Chief Executive, said.

Magnus Kårestedt, Gothenburg Port Authority's CEO, added, "We have for a long time believed in LNG as the fuel of the future. This investment by Swedegas is entirely in line with our ambition to reduce the environmental impact of shipping and establish a sustainable Scandinavian freight hub."
