SOL looks into launching an inland waterway container service

The Swedish shipping company is investigating the potential of putting in place a service that links Gothenburg and Lake Vänern with the use of a container ship.

The service would initially run two times per week in both directions, connecting Gothenburg with the regions of eastern Värmland (Möckeln area), western Örebro, and south Dalarna via the Port of Kristinehamn.

The route will be served by a 120-160 TEU capacity vessel, limited by the Göta River's locks to 88 m in length.

With the new service, the company targets the timber, wood, paper, and mining industries for exports, while the local and national retailers for imports.

"We see that the future belongs to those willing to take responsibility and understand the value of an active environmentally friendly solution to today's problems. We believe that we can be at the forefront and offer a system for a new sea based solution that is able to challenge the present market," Ragnar Johansson, Managing Director, Swedish Orient Line, commented.
