A symbolic laying down of rail lines has started the construction of the 7 km long electrified Kardon Railway which will link the Port of Norrköping with the country's trunk network via Händelö.
At present, rail freight traffic to and from the port goes close by the city centre. With the new connection, the port hopes that freight handling will be optimised and that an increasing volume of goods will shift onto railroads.
The Kardon Railway is jointly carried out by the Norrköping Munincipality and the Swedish Transport Administration.
"The goal with this new railway is to add to the cargo handling capacity, as well as to benefit from the previously made investments in a smart way. The Kardon Railway is historically important for both Norrköping and Sweden. This venture creates opportunities for those who want to establish their businesses and to invest in the city," Tomas Eneroth, Sweden’s Minister for Infrastructure, commented.
