The rail passenger market has opened

Several years after the cargo market was freed, the time came for passenger services. After 1 January 2010, the international passenger transport market is now completely open to competition.

Directive 2007/58/EC grants all European rail enterprises the right of access to the rail infrastructure in other EU member states for the purpose of operating an international passenger service. The new regulation states that all railway undertakings which have a licence and the required safety certificates will be able to operate international services. In order to create realistic economic conditions to develop the services, it will include the right for international trains to perform cabotage, i.e. carriage of passengers between two places within the same member state...
