Cultural shipping

The Stockholm Archipelago Floating Library set sail in 1953, when the coastal artillery vessel Rindö was four year-chartered and equipped with shelves for 2,000 books.

Although the service changed ships, it gallantly continues its noble mission to this day.

In years 2009-2015, the role of a Bokbåten (“Book boat” in Swedish) was performed by Tranan (GTB5,000, meaning gross tonnage books), a pax ship built in Denmark in 1935, which for 25 years hoisted the Danish Navy flag as tender Kongedybet, and as of 1970 it plies with passengers around Sweden’s capital.

Last year, the regional library chartered yet another member of the skärgårds - flotilla, Rödlöga.

She’s going to hop on a new wave of reading as of April 24th, having in its loop 23 island harbours during the first week of her 2017 service.
