BTJ 6/17 - Sink or swim. A quest for a sustainable marine economy

Oceans all across the world have always been a potent source of food.

Nowadays, we're also using them to generate electricity, obtain components for products like medicine and cosmetics, or simply to spend holidays by the sea or on a cruise.

At the same time, oceans are yet another ecosystem put by mankind under rising pressure. As the world's waters become hotter and more acidic, the environment is coerced to turn on its inhabitants.

Furthermore, fish stocks are being wastefully exploited, islands of plastic are further aggravating the global pollution, while resource-hungry states and companies are gearing toward seabed mining. In order to address these collective global challenges, the blue economy concept was proposed.
