Jolly Diamante, belonging to Ignazio Messina, is the first commercially operated ro-ro vessel with scrubber system that copes with the impending in 2015 0.1% sulphur Emission Control Areas (ECAs).

The 45,000 dwt ship has five Hamworthy Krystallon scrubbers, consisting of four units for the auxiliary engines (each 2MW) and one unit for the auxiliary boiler (2.5 tn steam per hour). All the scrubbers are housed within the ship funnel casings. The equipment also features a control system, combined wash-water treatment plant and a new range of super duplex stainless steel pumps. DNV approved the installation during testing in October 2011, it has also achieved RINA classification (Green Plus notation) and the system is MED certified.

Hamworthy Krystallon has also signed a contract with Hyundai Heavy Industries to deliver a scrubber system to a LPG tanker being constructed for Solvang ASA. The 84,000 cbm VLGC will be equipped with two scrubbers – one for the main engine and one combined scrubber for three auxiliary engines. The scrubbers and wash-water treatment are of modular design and will be placed in the funnel.

Sigurd Jenssen, managing director at Hamworthy Krystallon added that “by 2015, ship owners and operators operating in ECAs will have a simple choice - either pay the USD 300-400 price differential for costly distillate fuel or install a scrubber, which typically has a payback of less than 2 years. Ship owners and operators are increasingly aware of the impending supply chain issue facing the market, but many fail to consider that once a scrubber system is installed, it is important to develop operational experience prior to using on a daily basis.”
